What are these so-called toxins? Toxins come at us two ways: externally and internally. External toxins come from environmental exposures such as the air we breathe, products we put on our skin, and the food we eat. Toxins in our food stem from low-quality animal products, dairy products and fish; produce sprayed with pesticide chemicals; and all sorts of refined foods high in artificial ingredients. The resulting toxic wastes do get eliminated through pee, poop and perspiration, but not without taking an extra toll on the body.
Detoxing is in fact a normal, albeit unappreciated, everyday function of the body. Our kidneys, livers, skin and bladders all work to remove toxins and waste. However, unless you eat the cleanest diet, the body can get overwhelmed by a toxic backlog. Detoxification, in the formal sense, is an invitation to optimize your body’s ability to rid itself of toxins. Too much excess and you’ve got a situation on your hands, like when trash collectors go on strike and don’t pick up the garbage on the streets. The result is a breeding ground for illness.
Luckily, there are plenty of ways we can enhance our innate ability to cleanse and renew, from drinking more water to eliminating refined sugar and flour. A moderate detoxification plan will rejuvenate your body’s inherent efficiency, establish a healthier baseline and enable you to maintain better wellness choices.
There are many detox plans to choose from. I like a plan that eschews processed foods, is moderate, balanced, tapered, generous, and does not make you feel deprived. Opt for a sustainable plan (rather than a crash diet) that encourages a mild lifestyle shift, versus a radical, strict plan that encourages a fixation on righteous eating.
