Often, many of us fall into the trap of spending countless dollars on expensive, “high-end” cosmetics. But the truth is, a pricier product won’t necessarily give you the results you’re looking for. In many cases, it’s quite the opposite as a decent amount of them contain synthetic fragrances, dyes and other harsh chemicals. If you’re looking for another option – I don’t blame you! Listen up, honey, you may learn a thing or two! My short-and-sweet story starts with an eczema outbreak on my hands. Since then, my skin has become extra sensitive to a variety of ingredients lurking in many common skin care products. I quickly realized that finding a simple product with a few recognizable ingredients would be my best bet. Just one Google search for eczema relief yielded thousands of results. The one captivating ingredient people swore by? Honey. I soon discovered that people were using honey to sooth other skin conditions as well. I recall a few articles that noted that our ancestors have been using honey for 4,000 years for a variety of healing purposes! Better late than never, right?

The benefits of honey for skin

Honey has antiseptic, antibacterial and antifungal properties, which makes it a great topical for soothing sunburns. Honey is also a great skin moisturizer, pore cleanser and exfoliant. Honey is also a secret beauty weapon when it comes to fighting acne, lightening scars and evening skin tone (can your expensive high-end cleanser do all of that?!).

My 30-day honey “face wash” challenge

Clearly, I was sold. I committed to using honey on my face every day for one month. Here’s how it went. Week one Typically, when I try a new face wash, I brace myself for the breakouts and redness that usually follow the first application. I have very sensitive skin, so any sudden change in my routine sends it into chaos. It’s safe to say that I was pleasantly surprised to see that I had zero adverse reactions to slathering honey on my face. In fact, the dry patches had cleared up and my face was retaining its moisture instead of drying out. I also noticed that washing with honey is much less sticky than I thought it would be. The water dissolves it simply and quickly. Week two At this point, my skin felt beautifully moisturized and I started to notice that my pores were looking better than before. Blackheads were clearing up and my skin felt tight but not dry tight. It felt tight in a youthful way. I started leaving the honey on my face for a few minutes before scrubbing it off. Using it as a mask proved to be just as productive as cleansing with it. It also doesn't hurt that it smells amazing! Week three Mid-month, I started noticing my skin tone evening out. Also, the dry patches on my skin I previously experienced never came back – a huge win for me! I began getting a little more adventurous with honey and tried using the crystallized “buildup” in the jar as a gentle scrub (as the internet suggested). Afterward, I noticed that my skin had a more dewy glow. Week four At the end of the month, I couldn't believe how evenly toned and breakout-free my skin was. In addition to being a super cost-effective way to cleanse and nourish my skin, honey stood up against some of the most expensive face washes I’ve trialed (I also used WAY less moisturizer during this time). Since I started applying honey to my face, the eczema on my hands improved as well since the honey kept them from getting too dry. Challenging myself to use one, single-ingredient product was one of the best things I could’ve ever done for my skin. This pantry staple is now a bathroom staple in my household and I’ve continued to use honey on a regular basis after the initial 30 days.
