Instead of availing yourself on store-bought energy drinks, why not make your own? This one is practically a meal in itself. It’s packed with healthy fats, greens, superfoods, antioxidants, protein and seeds to make for a smoothiepalooza of energy-inducing goodness.
The recipe’s creator, Esther Cohen, is a registered dietitian, intuitive nutrition counselor, sports nutritionist, Bodytalk practitioner and energy healer. She knows her way around the kitchen—and the body.
“This is an appropriate winter smoothie because it is warming to the system [and] protecting against winter colds...improving circulation and energy flow,” she says.
So what are you waiting for? Pony up to your blender and get in the mix.
Homemade Green Energy Drink
Ingredients
Handful spinach or kale
Handful watercress
1/2 pear or apple
1/4 cup fresh or frozen berries
1/4 cup pomegranate juice
1 Tbsp. fresh grated ginger
1/4 tsp. cayenne
1 tsp. unsulphured blackstrap molasses
1 heaping tsp. extra-virgin coconut oil
1 Tbsp. fresh ground flax seeds
1 tsp chia seeds (soak in 1/4 cup water before adding)
2 tsp. fish oil/cod liver oil (EPA-DHA omega-3 oil)
2 scoops whey or pea protein concentrate (rather than isolates, as isolates are not as easy to assimilate)
¼ tsp. maca powder
Water (to achieve desired consistency)
Optional: ½ banana
Directions
In blender, combine all ingredients and process until smooth.
Elizabeth's notes: What I love about this green drink is how complete it is—I feel like I am doing an awesome job taking care of myself when I make it. I know that even if my food choices for the rest of the day are not optimal, at least I have a solid foundation from which to digress from. Try it yourself and see—you may be surprised how far it takes you through the day.
