[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]Kojic acid is an effective ingredient for brightening skin and evening texture and tone. Yet, many people either haven’t heard of it or don’t know much about it. It offers several benefits for skin health and appearance when used regularly in a skincare routine. Often found in
serums, creams,
dark spot products and exfoliants, there are so many ways to use it to improve skin health and tone, combat anti-aging and more, as there’s no shortage of kojic acid benefits for healthier, more youthful looking skin.
Here’s a breakdown of kojic acid and how it works, reasons to use it, best tips and products, as recommended by
Anna Chacon, MD, FAAD, a board-certified dermatologist based in Miami.
What Is Kojic Acid & How Is It Used in Skin Care?
How kojic acid works
Kojic acid is a natural byproduct derived from fungi during the fermentation process of rice, commonly associated with sake production. For skincare purposes, it’s mainly used for brightening skin,
treating dark spots, balancing tone and reducing anti-aging effects. It’s a staple to use on skin regularly, and the sooner you start using it, the better.
“Kojic acid is widely used for its skin-lightening and anti-aging properties, and it works by inhibiting the enzyme tyrosinase, which is necessary for melanin production, making it effective for reducing dark spots and uneven skin tone,” explains Chacon.
By reducing
melanin production, known to directly lighten pigmented areas, it brightens skin and evens tone. It also reduces age spots and improves skin radiance by limiting melanin production and oxidative stress, promoting a youthful appearance.
Kojic acid improves hyperpigmentation by lightening dark patches for a more even skin tone, and its antimicrobial properties help heal and reduce scars by lightening pigmented areas to prevent and treat discoloration over time.
“Antimicrobial properties can aid in preventing infection and promoting healing, and starting with products like spot treatments or creams, applying once daily and increasing usage based on tolerance, with consistent use over weeks to months, will yield the best results,” Chacon says.
How to use kojic acid
“Apply a kojic acid serum or cream after cleansing and before moisturizing, ideally at night, and start with applications a few times per week to build tolerance and prevent irritation,” Chacon suggests. “Products containing kojic acid can be combined with ingredients like
niacinamide for enhanced brightening effects,” Chacon adds.
Start using kojic acid topicals 2-3 times per week and increase gradually based on personal skin type and needs, seeing how skin reacts most importantly, to avoid dryness or adverse reactions. Apply topically as serum, cream,
dark spot treatment or exfoliant, ideally combining ingredients that work well with kojic acid to boost potency and soothe skin with hydrating elements.
“It pairs well with other lightening agents, such as azelaic acid or
retinoids, but should be used with caution to avoid over-irritation,” says Chacon, advising to use kojic acid in the evening and
sunscreen in the day to prevent any possible additional darkening.
Kojic acid pros and cons
“Individuals with hyperpigmentation,
melasma or dark spots may benefit the most, while those with sensitive skin might need to be cautious due to potential irritation,” says Chacon.
People who suffer from acne and breakouts may benefit most as kojic acid’s antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory properties target and treat
acne as well as minimize future breakouts by better managing and taming bacterial growth. Also, people with
sun spots, melasma or an uneven skin tone, may find kojic acid particularly beneficial due to its melanin-inhibiting properties.
“It’s best used in conjunction with other acne treatments like
salicylic acid, beginning with a low-concentration product a few times a week to monitor for irritation and gradually increasing usage,” says Chacon, suggesting formulations with a gel consistency or any lightweight serums.
Those with sensitive or eczema-prone skin should avoid or at least be cautious with using kojic acid as it can cause irritation, redness or contact dermatitis. Always conduct a patch test before trying any new skincare products, just to be safe. If any adverse reactions occur, cease use and speak to a doctor if concerned.
Best kojic acid products
A face cream or moisturizer is a good staple in a skincare routine, such as a
brightening cream with kojic acid and other effective ingredients to boost absorption, benefits and results. If you have acne prone skin, look for a cream or moisturizer that combines kojic acid, azelaic acid, tranexamic acid and niacinamide to not only target and treat discoloration and dark spots, but also combat acne and promote scar healing from blemishes and irritation.
“A cream formulation allows for thorough hydration, complementing the lightening effects and boosting skin radiance,” Chacon says.
An
exfoliant or liquid peel is another great topical to use to brighten and lighten skin. Exfoliating regularly removes dead skin cells, giving skin a softer, fresher and more youthful glow. A
liquid peel exfoliant with kojic acid, along with a medley of other fantastic skincare ingredients, can be helpful in offsetting
dryness or irritation, especially if you have sensitive skin or skin conditions.
“This exfoliant offers a powerful combination of
vitamin C and multi-acid complexes that slough away dead skin cells and promote a brighter, smoother complexion, making it ideal for boosting the effects of kojic acid by prepping the skin for better absorption of actives,” says Chacon.
Besides vitamin C, there’s also niacinamide,
hyaluronic acid and antioxidants including vitamin E and bromelain, to hydrate skin and lock in moisture as well as accentuate brightening effects.
A
dark spot serum for correction and hyperpigmentation brightens and lightens skin, for a more even, smooth and fresh appearance and tone. It’s best used daily in tandem with topicals, such as jelly or
gel cleansers, sunscreens, moisturizers, exfoliants and
toners. This serum is potent, with a concentrated, high-antioxidant formula. It can be used alone but will work best if applied and worn under day or night cream and with sunscreens and exfoliants for speedier results.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_text_separator title="Featured Products" border_width="2"][vc_row_inner][vc_column_inner width="2/12"][/vc_column_inner][vc_column_inner width="3/12"][vc_single_image image="180264" img_size="full" onclick="custom_link" img_link_target="_blank" css="" link="https://www.vitacost.com/reviva-labs-multi-factor-brightening-creme"][/vc_column_inner][vc_column_inner width="2/12"][/vc_column_inner][vc_column_inner width="3/12"][vc_single_image image="180263" img_size="full" onclick="custom_link" img_link_target="_blank" css="" link="https://www.vitacost.com/mad-hippie-vitamin-c-serum-travel-size"][/vc_column_inner][vc_column_inner width="2/12"][/vc_column_inner][/vc_row_inner][/vc_column][/vc_row]
