How to Save Money and Still Have a Healthy, Happy Holiday Season

[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]The approach of the winter holidays tends to be an exciting time, especially for children. And while it should be an enjoyable prospect for adults as well, it can, in fact, pose a significant challenge for many families, especially those on a tight budget. There’s no getting around it, the traditional approach to the winter holidays can be expensive. There are so many areas people typically spend on?preparing and sending holiday photo cards, a tree and other home décor, gifts for family, friends, staff, coworkers, neighbors, party hosts, etc., food, alcoholic beverages and other costs associated with entertaining and celebrating.   Unfortunately, many people are operating on a lean margin this year. In fact, 58% of Americans are effectively living paycheck to paycheck. This is due in part to the fact that the cost of basic household expenses—rent, groceries and utilities—are all higher than a year ago, weakening consumers’ purchasing power. Currently, around 70% of Americans admit to being stressed about finances, according to a CNBC Your Money Financial Confidence Survey of 4,336 adults conducted in March 2023. The survey found that the main sources of financial stress were:
  • Inflation (60% of respondents)
  • Economy-wide instability (43% of respondents)
  • Rising interest rates (36% of respondents)
  • Lack of savings (35% of respondents). For those who do have emergency savings, about 26% polled said they have less than $5,000 saved.
Nor is it a level playing field in terms of gender, with 72% of women reporting that they are financially stressed, compared to 67% of men. Women are also more likely to be living paycheck to paycheck and to have no emergency savings.  Yet, these disquieting statistics don’t change the fact that parents typically want to make the season as happy and memorable for their children as possible. Fortunately, with a little creativity and imagination, one can spin holiday magic on a dime, in a manner of speaking. These tips can help:

How to Save Money and Still Have a Healthy, Happy Holiday SeasonSet a holiday budget and stick to it

If you have wonderful holiday intentions contrasted with a skinny budget, you’re not alone. Holiday fanfare seems to come at too high a price for many. Research suggests that fully 63% of Americans feel pressure to spend beyond their means in their attempts to make a nice celebration for their families. Sadly, this can backfire by creating spiraling debt. So, how can you avoid this common scenario?  To ensure the financial security of your family, it is best to get everyone clear on expectations early on, while keeping the mood positive. A reduced cash flow may even result in a more pleasant, relaxed family experience, because it creates an opportunity to emphasize simple joys that cost little or nothing.

Save and spend wisely throughout the year

Last-minute holiday shopping can be both expensive and stressful, which is why many people are rethinking it altogether. Almost half (46%) of consumers started their holiday shopping before November last year, up from 39% in 2019, and this year is shaping up to follow the same trend.  This early shopping allows people to better manage holiday expenditures by spreading out their gift-shopping budget. By strategically shopping within your normal routine year-round, you are far better able to take advantage of sales and seasonal discounts along the way, stocking up over time on thoughtful, affordable items. The end of summer is a great time for gift bargains, for example.

Create low-cost holiday traditions

They say the greatest joys in life are free. If so, that’s especially true during the holiday season when families have a chance to spend time together that may lack during the busy days of work, school and other business or social obligations. Why not expand upon prior celebrations to create new activities to share during this family time, or revisit past options that kids may better enjoy now?  A fresh take on holiday traditions with kids may include walking, hiking, cycling, ice skating, downhill or cross-country skiing, etc. Make outdoor fitness fun by setting a goal, visiting neighbors or otherwise targeting a special destination. Return to warm up with spicy-sweet Mexican hot chocolate and stories, a hand of gin rummy or a jigsaw puzzle by the fire.

Emphasize experiences over material items

Dr. Laurie Steelsmith, ND, LAc, a naturopathic physician and licensed acupuncturist who specializes in women’s health, suggests giving an “experiential” rather than material gift, which applies to people of all ages. Depending on the recipient, this could be:

Give pampering DIY holiday gifts

If you’re up for a little creativity, you can have a wonderful time making DIY gifts for those individuals whom you know appreciate the personal touch. Self-care is a great focal point, as many busy people fall short in this area. See what inspires you with all these inexpensive DIY mini projects to consider:

Cater to the animal lover with DIY dog treats

You probably have more than a few animal lovers on your guest list, for whom pet treats make a splendid gift. After all, commercial products can be costly and far less wholesome than homemade options. This is an especially appealing prospect for kids, many of whom adore animals. It’s also something they can “own” from start to finish with a bit of oversight, which is both fun and empowering. Check out these cool options:

Wow ‘em with homemade holiday desserts

There’s a reason why humans have gifted food since primal days. People love high-quality, hand-crafted treats, which are also fun and affordable gifts to make and share. This is another great way to involve kids, as many love all aspects of baking. Let them develop a specialty! That will make it extra enjoyable for them and also boosts self-esteem. A cool project for little ones is chocolate bark, as this treat, which can be crafted in endless varieties, looks elegant and sophisticated but is surprisingly easy to make by simply adding fun toppings to melted chocolate. Think hemp seeds, currants, dried berries, sliced almonds, pecans, lavender, rose petals, orange or lemon zest, cacao nibs or coconut. Here are some delightful, easy options to get your crew started: As you look ahead to your holiday experience, the timing is perfect to imagine and craft your desired outcome. So, grab a pen and paper and sketch out a plan, emphasizing ideas you like, activities to explore based on your families’ preferences and location, crafts to pursue, etc.  You can also get a sense of which holiday-related projects or DIY gift options interest your kids, allowing you to shop together for supplies in advance, adding to the fun for little ones. This preparation also helps minimize last-minute holiday stress, as you have a plan to place that considers the whole gang. Cheers to an elegantly simplified, wonderfully affordable, pressure-free holiday celebration! [/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_text_separator title="Featured Products" border_width="2"][vc_row_inner equal_height="yes" content_placement="middle" gap="35"][vc_column_inner width="1/3"][vc_single_image image="170523" img_size="full" alignment="center" onclick="custom_link" img_link_target="_blank" css=".vc_custom_1700505096351{padding-right: 7% !important;padding-left: 7% !important;}" link="https://www.vitacost.com/manitoba-harvest-organic-hemp-hearts-raw-shelled-hemp-seeds"][/vc_column_inner][vc_column_inner width="1/3"][vc_single_image image="170524" img_size="full" alignment="center" onclick="custom_link" img_link_target="_blank" css=".vc_custom_1700505153168{padding-right: 7% !important;padding-left: 7% !important;}" link="https://www.vitacost.com/navitas-organics-organic-cacao-nibs"][/vc_column_inner][vc_column_inner width="1/3"][vc_single_image image="170522" img_size="full" alignment="center" onclick="custom_link" img_link_target="_blank" css=".vc_custom_1700505188543{padding-right: 7% !important;padding-left: 7% !important;}" link="https://www.vitacost.com/lets-do-organic-shredded-coconut-unsweetened"][/vc_column_inner][/vc_row_inner][/vc_column][/vc_row]
