Frontier Co-op® Sweet Basil Leaf is a universal culinary herb (Ocimum basilicum) from the mint family (Lamiaceae) and is widely used for a variety of cooking needs across the globe. The leaves are organically grown and processed, kosher certified, and non-irradiated. This natural ingredient is sourced directly from Egypt.

 

Sweet Basil leaf combines well with garlic, parsley, rosemary, oregano, thyme, and sage. It has become a popular option for pizzas alongside oregano, and it can even be extracted to make essential oils. It is also used in DIY body care. Our Sweet Basil Leaf delivers a taste similar to anise, while also providing a strong, pungent, and sweet aroma. It is extremely popular in American kitchens due to its mild mint and pepper flavors.


Directions

Basil is a customary seasoning in tomato-based sauces, juices, and pesto. It blends well with oregano for pizza sauce, and with other seasonings, especially lemon, garlic and thyme.

 

Suggested Use:

- Try basil with fish, poultry, pasta, rice, eggs, and vegetables like zucchini, eggplant, potatoes, carrots, cauliflower and spinach.

- Use it is soups, stews, vinegars, and salad dressings (or sprinkle it directly on salads).

- Lay fresh leaves of basil over sliced fresh or buffalo mozzarella and drizzle with olive oil for a quick, light salad.

Grilled Vegetable Pizza With Balsamic Sauce

Grilled Vegetable Pizza With Balsamic Sauce

  • 1 12-inch pizza crust (homemade or packaged)
  • 1-1/3 cups grated Gruyere or Swiss cheese

Grilled vegetables

  • 2 Tbsp. olive oil
  • 1 Tbsp. soy sauce
  • 1/8 tsp. Frontier Co-op Organic Garlic Powder
  • 1 small green pepper (sliced)
  • 8 grape tomatoes (halved)
  • 1/2 small eggplant (sliced in rounds and then halved)
  • 1/2 small red onion (cut in small wedges)

Balsamic tomato sauce

  • 1/2 cup tomato paste
  • 1 Tbsp. balsamic vinegar
  • 1/2 tsp. Frontier Co-op Sweet Basil
  • 1/2 tsp. Frontier Co-op Organic Oregano
  • 1/4 tsp. Frontier Co-op Organic Rosemary
  • 1/4 tsp. Frontier Co-op Marjoram
  1. Preheat oven to 475 degrees F.
  2. Place prepped vegetables on grilling mat or equivalent.
  3. In small bowl, whisk together olive oil, soy sauce and garlic powder. Brush mixture on vegetables. On grill over medium flame, cook vegetables until browned and tender.
  4. In bowl, combine tomato paste, balsamic vinegar, basil, oregano, rosemary and marjoram. Spread sauce on prepared pizza crust. Top with grilled vegetables followed by cheese.
  5. Bake 15-18 minutes, until cheese is melted and crust is lightly browned.

Substitute with any favorite seasonal vegetables. Grilling vegetables brings out the sweetness, complementing the spicy balsamic sauce. Feel free to vary the cheese; Provolone and feta work well.
