5 Shaving Mistakes to Avoid + Tips for Smooth Legs All Summer

[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]With summer around the corner, it's time for leg shavers to get ready. You may be surprised to know that as you start getting into a regular shaving routine, there is a right way and a wrong way to get smooth legs. Unfortunately, there's a good chance you'll make numerous shaving mistakes this season. These mistakes could irritate your legs and sabotage your efforts to look good in shorts, skirts and bathing suits. Here are the five most common shaving mistakes you're probably making and what you can do to ensure smooth, hairless legs this spring and summer. A Close Up Shows a Man's Leg Being Shaved With White Shaving Cream and a Black and White Razor, Representing Shaving Tips.

Shaving Tips to Follow & Mistakes to Avoid

Mistake #1: Not changing your razor or blade frequently enough

Be honest. How long have you been using the same razor? If you can't remember, then it's time to ditch the one you're using and bring out a new one. Maybe you didn't know you were supposed to change it frequently, or maybe you're a bit lazy or forgetful. But changing your blade or using a new razor every five to seven shaves is important. Blades get dull, and a dull blade can cause red, irritated skin and bumps or, worse, nick your skin. Additionally, blades collect dead skin and bacteria, and you don't want to use a razor harboring that gross stuff. How to fix your mistake: Keep a supply of new razors or razor blades on hand so you can swamp them out in a timely fashion. You'll be happy you did because not only are old blades nasty, but new blades are easier and more effective to use.

Mistake #2: You're shaving in the wrong direction

Quick question: Do you shave in the direction your hair grows or against it? Or do you shave both ways because you think it's best or you're just not sure? Argh! What should you do? According to the American Academy of Dermatology (AAD), the correct way to shave is in the direction your hair grows. Who knew? Shaving this way helps prevent bumps and burns. How to fix your mistake: Be sure to only shave in the direction your hair grows. Any other way can increase your risk of irritation and also ingrown hairs. Additionally, don't shave in the same area more than once. Repeatedly shaving the same area doesn't make your legs smoother. What it does is irritate your skin.

Mistake #3: Shaving without shaving cream or gel

We've all been in a hurry and thought a dry shave over the sink or toilet would be quick and easy. Unfortunately, it may be those things, but it also increases your chances of cuts, burns and skin irritation. Shaving gel or cream is specifically made to reduce these issues and is especially useful in sensitive areas such as your bikini line. How to fix your mistake: Always use shaving gel or cream on all the body parts you shave. In a pinch, if you're out of gel or cream, you can use conditioner, body lotion or body oil to get that same hydrating smooth experience as a shaving product.

Mistake #4: Shaving at the start of your shower

If your shower and bathing routine entails shaving before you lather up your hair and body, just switch activities up. It's best to shave at the end of your shower or just after your shower because your skin will be clean and free of excess grime, dead skin cells and oil—all of which can clog your razor. Additionally, your skin will be moist and warm, making it more conducive to a smooth, nick-free shave. How to fix your mistake: Start your shower by shampooing and conditioning your hair and washing and exfoliating your skin. Don't skip the exfoliating part before you shave. Exfoliating with a loofah or towel helps minimize dead skin that can clog your razor and mess up your shave.

Mistake #5: Storing your razor in the shower

Since most people shave in the shower, storing your razor there along with your shaving cream or gel probably seems like the smart thing to do. However, leaving your razor in a damp, moist environment invites bacteria to congregate there. Plus, dampness accelerates rust, and shaving with a rusty razor can lead to nicks, cuts, bumps, irritation, and an infection. How to fix your mistake: After you shave, clean your razor thoroughly, dry it, and then store it in a clean, dry spot outside your shower. When you're ready to shave, bring your clean, dry razor into the shower or shaving spot of choice. Repeat. After your shower and shave, be sure to moisturize to lock in the moisture and minimize dryness and razor burn. Also, according to the Cleveland Clinic, shaving does NOT make your hair grow back thicker, so don't shy away from shaving frequently to get a smooth, stubble-free look and feel.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_text_separator title="Featured Products" border_width="2"][vc_row_inner equal_height="yes" content_placement="middle" gap="35"][vc_column_inner width="1/3"][vc_single_image image="175029" img_size="full" alignment="center" onclick="custom_link" img_link_target="_blank" css=".vc_custom_1715633939979{padding-right: 7% !important;padding-left: 7% !important;}" link="https://www.vitacost.com/tierra-mia-organics-shaving-soap-for-women"][/vc_column_inner][vc_column_inner width="1/3"][vc_single_image image="175027" img_size="full" alignment="center" onclick="custom_link" img_link_target="_blank" css=".vc_custom_1715633955990{padding-right: 7% !important;padding-left: 7% !important;}" link="https://www.vitacost.com/harrys-razor-blade-cartridge-refills-for-men"][/vc_column_inner][vc_column_inner width="1/3"][vc_single_image image="175026" img_size="full" alignment="center" onclick="custom_link" img_link_target="_blank" css=".vc_custom_1715633970844{padding-right: 7% !important;padding-left: 7% !important;}" link="https://www.vitacost.com/hand-in-hand-foaming-shave-cream-cactus-blossom"][/vc_column_inner][/vc_row_inner][/vc_column][/vc_row]
