Magnesium is a mineral required for the healthy function of every organ in the body, especially the heart, muscles and kidneys. It even contributes to the makeup of teeth and bones. Magnesium activates enzymes, contributes to energy production, and helps regulate levels of calcium, copper, zinc, potassium, vitamin D, and other important nutrients in the body.
You can get magnesium from an array of foods, but most people in the U.S. probably do not get as much magnesium as they should from their diet. Foods rich in magnesium include whole grains, nuts and green vegetables.
Spray-on magnesium?
As a complement to a magnesium rich diet, topically applied pure magnesium oil is an increasingly popular way to support healthy levels. The term is a misnomer, as it is not oil per se. It refers to the oily texture that occurs when magnesium chloride flakes are mixed with water. Topical magnesium applications are based on the same idea of magnesium-rich Epsom salts, long held to be absorbed through the skin. Preliminary research suggests Epsom salts can relieve swelling, inflammation and ease muscle aches and pains. Similarly, magnesium sprays transmit the benefits of magnesium through the skin.
Some health experts have even begun calling topical magnesium application, Transdermal Magnesium Therapy (TMT). One recent study suggests that regularly using transdermal magnesium therapy, such as sprays, can increase cellular magnesium levels by as much as 25 percent after 12 weeks.*
Applied topically, magnesium is directly absorbed by skin cells. It may aid with the following*:
- Healthy sleep
- Muscle recovery
- Skin health
- Energy and mood health
- Athletic performance
Transdermal magnesium is applied easily and quickly in one’s own home, either by simply spraying directly on the skin, applying as a lotion or a gel, or even more effortlessly through taking a magnesium bath. If you are interested in the spray-on technique, here are four tips to get you started.
How to use pure magnesium oil
Spray it on the skin directly.
Apply it when the skin is free of other oils that could block absorption.
Rub it in and leave it on to penetrate for about thirty minutes.
Spray frequently during the day and consistently over a time period of several weeks to notice a difference.
Note: It’s pretty typical to feel a slight tingling or stinging. If the tingling doesn’t lessen with use, you may need to dilute the spray with more water. This is not an allergic reaction but rather a reaction to magnesium’s salty quality.
