[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]As the Director of Social Impact at
MegaFood, I’m proud to work with an activist company that’s always pushing for change. We are committed to growing the
regenerative agriculture movement and investing in systems and incentives that support farmers. A big part of regenerative agriculture is the consciousness of it. It aims to support the whole. No one part (say, yield!) is more important than another part of the system. It’s not extractive, its inclusive and in balance. That includes farm workers. And these essential, highly experienced people are often at the biggest disadvantage in our current food system.
They are often not eligible for the same social safety programs, grossly underpaid and working in high risk and often straight up dangerous conditions. This angers me, and likely angers you as well. There are huge structural issues that touch on government programs, immigration, poverty and racism that plague this area of agriculture. At MegaFood we’ve ask ourselves this question: what role does a brand have in standing for a more equitable food system? Some problems don’t have simple solutions. And that doesn’t mean that you do nothing.
MegaFood: Corporate Social Responsibly
As a
responsible brand that’s standing for systems approaches and balance – for MegaFood, the people part of agriculture is just as important as the food. In order to make an impact in this space, we wanted to support farm laborers and use the power and money that we have as a brand to try to protect them. In service of this, we partnered with the
Women’s Earth Alliance (WEA) through its Accelerator Program.
WEA catalyzes women-led grassroots solutions to protect our environment and strengthen communities from the inside out. They are an amazing organization that MegaFood has been partnering with for several years now and we are excited about and grateful for the work we are doing together.
It's been a joy to work with Amira over time in order to support super-aligned agricultural work with female grassroots activists in the field who are working on protecting farm laborers. WEA allows us a direct line to the activists who are on the ground, pushing for change. We are so happy to support these brilliant, courageous women.
This year, MegaFood was able to support
WEA’s Farmworker Rights & Food Sovereignty’s Grassroots Accelerator. With Accelerators, WEA supports leadership, strategy and technical training for young advocates, helping them scale their initiatives while connecting them to a global alliance. We are thrilled about this partnership simply because all of this is what truly matters to us here at MegaFood.
We are committed to regenerative agriculture, transparency, soil health, fair & diverse employment practices, and above all else, we exist to grow a healthier world. That’s what makes us grateful for our relationship with WEA and the future for supporting programs like these.
The women in this year’s Farmworker Rights & Food Sovereignty’s Accelerator are truly incredible. This program will help amplify their voices and support them in service of their initiatives which include:
- Supporting at-risk farm worker communities in the central valley
- Educating farm workers on their rights around safe pesticide practices
- Championing health rights for farm workers
- And so much more to help them thrive!
With our support they are receiving skills training webinars, and more. Generously, some of these amazing young leaders are also helping us at MegaFood! They are providing valuable feedback to our
Healthy Farm Standard so that we can further improve our ethical sourcing programs and helping guide our advocacy work around farm worker rights.
I believe responsible companies should use their influence and power to serve and protect those that don’t. More needs to be done and we are happy to highlight and financially support the work of these women.
