The Celery Juice Trend: 4 Things a Dietitian Wants You to Know

If you've checked Instagram lately, chances are you've seen an influencer or even a friend raving about the healing powers of celery juice. Some of the health benefits that fans are crediting this little green drink with include protection against high blood pressure, reducing inflammation, healing eczema and halting cancer, to name a few.

Benefits of Celery Juice Demonstrated by Two Glasses of Green Juice Surrounded by Celery Stalks on White Wooden Table | Vitacost.com/blog

While a daily glass of celery juice may offer some benefits, there are some things that registered dietitians want you to keep in mind.

1. Avoid drinking only juice

Juicing is nothing new in the world of nutrition trends, with juice cleanses gaining great popularity in past years. However, juice is not meant to be a meal replacement! The best way to utilize juicing is to supplement your already-balanced diet rich in whole foods such as fruits, vegetables, lean meats and whole grains. Keep in mind juicing strips the fiber from our veggies which is one of the main reasons we need them so much in the first place! Try blending veggies in a smoothie to keep the fiber benefit.

2. High five for hydration!

Did you know celery is about 95 percent  water? That’s right! So when you're trying to down those eight glasses every day, try adding in some celery juice in as an alternative way to stay hydrated and add variety to your beverages.

3. Make it a smart swap

Celery juice also can be a great replacement for your daily soda or other juices that are much higher in sugar. One cup of celery juice supplies about 70 calories and 11 grams of sugar versus a can of soda which has about 140 calories and 39 grams of sugar.

4. Don't believe everything you read

Currently, there is no research to support many of the claims celery juice advocates have made. But remember -- you don’t have to write off plain-old celery! It's low in calories, has healthy fiber and provides an undeniably satisfying crunch. Pair celery sticks with peanut butter for a simple, refreshing snack.

Celery juice is fine for most people to consume daily, but do not rely on it as your golden ticket to better health. We recommend consuming celery juice in addition to a balanced, whole-food diet that includes a wide variety other fruits and vegetables as well!

When in doubt, seek out a registered dietitian in your area to help tailor a nutrition plan to your individual needs.
