Is Sugaring the New Waxing? Try it With These 5 Simple Steps

It’s summer, which means more exposed skin, and more exposed skin (for many women and men) leads to a mad rush to eradicate any and all unwanted body hair. The thing is, it can be really hard to achieve that smooth-skinned ideal without dealing with an array of annoying side effects and skin irritations. While shaving is quick and convenient, a lot of people have trouble getting a close shave or are stuck with a serious case of razor burn every time they walk within 50 feet of a disposable blade.

Spa-Like Essentials for Sugaring at Home and Natural Hair Removal on Black Table | Vitacost.com/blog

Getting a body wax is a good option. But for some people, the thought of fitting regular salon appointments into their schedule – not to mention their budget – sends them into a fit of laughter. Also, those with sensitive skin can have a hard time with waxing causing ingrown hairs and painful skin irritations.

If you fall into either or both of these groups, try something new at home. Sugaring is the kinder, gentler cousin of waxing. It’s easier than it sounds and you can do it right at home.

Simple Steps to Sugaring Hair Removal Success

1. Cleanse

Start with clean, fresh, healthy skin. Use a gentle cleanser and warm but not hot water. Yes, this applies regardless of where you’re planning to sugar, understood? In fact, the more sensitive the area you’re planning to sugar, the more carefully you need to approach skin care in that area. You want to have clean skin, but you don’t want to strip the oils and be left with dry, thin and irritated skin. That would make the entire experience, shall we say…torturous? So following a gentle cleaning, you will want to use a lightweight, oil-free moisturizer to keep your skin supple and smooth.

2. Exfoliate

If you’re aiming for smooth, hairless skin, you’ll need to learn how to gently and effectively exfoliate whatever areas you plan to sugar. Layers of dead skin will leave you with ingrown hairs and uneven hair removal. Try an all-natural body scrub or make your own at home with sea salt, coconut oil and a few drops of lavender essential oil. Another great option is to get in the habit of using a dry skin brush every day before you shower or bathe. Dry brushing not only removes dead and dry skin, but it wakes up your body by getting your blood circulating.

3. The sugaring process

Now that your skin is prepped and ready, you’ll need the right tools. Moom Organic Hair Removal Kit is an easy way to start your adventure in sugaring at-home . This starter kit comes with a jar of hair removal sugar, prepared with skin-calming elements like chamomile and lavender, reusable (washable) fabric strips, sugar solution applicators and detailed instructions on how to have a successful sugaring experience. The Moom kit is an at-home hair removal essential and the refills of sugar  solution and organic fabric strips make it easy to maintain your summertime silky-smooth skin.

4. Soothe

While sugaring is far less aggressive than waxing and less irritating than shaving, you’re still aggressively removing hair from your body. Any and all hair removal calls for some basic post-hair removal skin soothing. First, use a cotton cloth with warm water to remove any sugaring solution and residue that might have been left behind. As anyone who has ever waxed before knows, the ability to wipe away excess sugar with just warm water is enough to convince you of sugaring for hair removal. You won’t need a heavy oil to soothe your skin like you do with waxing, but you should still apply a gentle moisturizer.

5. Maintain

If your skin can handle it every day, swipe a cotton ball soaked in a small amount of witch hazel across the area that’s been sugared to help prevent ingrown hairs. You’ll also want to make sure you stay on an exfoliating routine. If you let that old dead skin set up camp on your body, you’re basically destroying all your hard work out of sheer laziness.

Most people find they need to plan a sugaring session every three to four weeks to keep the unwanted hair at bay. The good news is that similar to waxing, sugar often leads to thinner, more sparse hair growth in the treatment areas. Give it time, and you'll need this sugaring hair removal routine less and less.

Until next winter, happy sugaring!
