Keep Your Home Gym in Top Shape With This Cleaning Schedule

[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]More people are finding it convenient, cost effective and frankly less germy to invest in home gyms. But machines, mats, balls and dumbbells aren’t cheap! To make the investment worthwhile, it’s important to care for and maintain each piece. Cleaning and maintenance should be done on a daily, weekly and monthly basis. If done correctly, you’ll keep harmful germs away and your equipment will last a long time.

Gym Cleaning Maintenance Schedules

Daily cleaning (or after each use)

  • Gym equipment easily collects dust, sweat and body oils, which can cause the breakdown of your equipment. This includes bench upholstery, mats, dumbbell grips, handles and even the metal. It’s important to take a few minutes after each workout to wipe down each piece of equipment that is used.
  • After using a piece of equipment, wipe off sweat with a rag. Follow that up with a cleaning wipe or a natural cleaning spray. When using a spray do not spray directly onto cardio equipment, as the spray could damage the electrical components.
  • It’s best to clean cardio equipment by spraying cleaner onto a cloth and then wiping down machine parts that were used or where sweat may have been.
  • Cleaning spray can be directly applied to benches, mats and dumbbells and then wiped off.
  • Lastly, a disinfecting spray can be lightly sprayed over equipment.

Weekly cleaning

  • To keep dust and grime from building up on machines and the floor or mats under your equipment, dust off all part of each machine with a microfiber cloth.
  • Vacuum or sweep under pieces of larger equipment, like a treadmill or stationary bike. Then, using a disinfecting cleaner, either mop or mist and wipe up with a cloth the surrounding area under your equipment.
  • Unplug cardio equipment for a deeper clean and wipe down the entire machine.
  • Wipe down all free weights.
  • Exercise bands can be soaked in warm water and mild cleaning solution for several minutes. Gently scrub any spots with stains. Rinse with clean water and let air dry.

Monthly maintenance

  • Check for wear and tear of your machines, mats, dumbbells, bands and stability balls – all of your at-home equipment.
  • Repair or replace any upholstery tears on benches, mats and/or bike seats.
  • Inspect cables for fraying.
  • Inspect machines and benches for loose or broken parts.
  • Replace exercise bands that are thinning to avoid breaking in the middle of a workout.
  • Inflate stability balls.
  • Machines should be lubricated with a silicone lubricant. Spray the lubricant on a microfiber cloth and wipe down tracks on machines. Check any self-lubricating machines you have and fill them as directed by the maintenance manual.
  • For larger pieces of equipment, check the owner’s manual for any suggested monthly maintenance tips.
