The Benefits of Low-Acid Coffee, According to a Dietitian

It’s a new year – a time for new possibilities, new goals and new resolutions. A new year also means you might need an extra boost to accomplish all those new things on your to-do list! What better solution is there than a delicious cup of coffee?

The benefits of drinking coffee

Coffee is brewed in over half of American kitchens every morning, filling the air with the rich aroma of caffeinated goodness, promising productivity and health benefits. It stimulates our minds and increases our focus by binding to adenosine receptors in the brain. It gets us moving and keeps us moving through busy workdays and tackling everything we need to get done at home. What’s more, coffee may help reduce the risk for type two diabetes, cardiovascular disease and colon cancer, all of which could result from our cultural tendency to overstress, overeat and never rest. Despite its many benefits, coffee does come with some drawbacks. Has coffee ever irritated your stomach or aggravated your reflux, causing heartburn? Coffee has a pH of around 5, meaning it has a fairly high acid content. So if you suffer from heartburn, reflux, indigestion or upset stomach, drinking coffee may be an unpleasant experience for you.

What is low acid coffee?

If you love coffee, but it just never seems to agree with you, you might consider trying low-acid coffee.  It offers the same taste and benefits of regular coffee, without the post-coffee ‘burn.’ Puroast is an exceptional brand that’s 70% less acidic than most popular brands of coffee. In fact, when consumers who have experienced GI distress with coffee tried Puroast, 76% reported that those GI symptoms were partially or completely relieved after drinking low-acid coffee. Additionally, Purroast coffee delivers seven times more antoxidants than most coffees on the market today!

Who should drink low-acid coffee?

Individuals with the following conditions may find benefit in drinking low-acid coffee:
  • Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD)
  • Acid reflux
  • Heartburn
  • Sour stomach
  • Interstitial cystitis
  • Irritable bowel disease
(Dietitian’s side note: Reflux plagues many Americans, and sometimes just choosing a low-acid coffee isn’t enough. Many dietary and lifestyle interventions can assist with reflux. Adding more fiber to your diet, for example, increases satiety at meals and helps prevent overeating, which can contribute to heartburn. You also could reduce consumption of common foods that aggravate reflux, such as chocolate, greasy or spicy foods, tomato-based foods, and high-fat highly processed foods. Some supplements may be helpful also, such as vitamin B complex and probiotics, or ginger and licorice teas, to name a few. Always be sure to consult with a registered dietitian and/or your healthcare provider before making changes to your diet.) If you read through this article and thought, yep that’s me, I recommend giving low-acid coffee a try. There are several to choose from, but the smooth taste and huge antioxidant boost of Puroast Coffee puts it at the top of my low-acid coffee list. All of their claims are backed by research, which as an evidence-based practitioner, is something I value in a brand. Don’t let your heartburn or reflux get in the way of enjoying your favorite morning beverage. Try a cup of low-acid coffee, your stomach will thank me later!
