Keratin or Biotin: Which is Better for Healthy Hair?

Dry, winter air leads to flat, brittle hair. It’s a fact of life. Yet, each year, you scramble to find a solution to the constant shedding, frizz and flyaway hairs. You think biotin-enriched shampoos are the answer, but you’ve also heard chatter about keratin. So which road to recovery do you take?

Blonde Woman Outside Blows Bubbles, Thinking About Keratin or Biotin for Hair Benefits | Vitacost.com/blog

First, the good news. Spring brings higher temperatures and moisture content, making it the perfect season for damage control. But to fully restore hair’s health and shine, you’ll have to get down to the root of the problem.

At your hair’s root, you’ll find a fibrous protein called keratin. In fact, over 80% of hair is made of keratin, so it contributes largely to hair’s strength and density. Keratin is also found in your skin and nails, making it an important component of your overall beauty routine.

Support Keratin Production

To fortify your body’s natural production of keratin protein, make sure you’re supplying it with the building blocks that keep tresses looking thick and lustrous, including amino acids, vitamins and minerals. It’s true—beauty comes from within, which is why you’ll want to consume these nutrients through a balanced, natural diet and fill nutritional gaps with supplements.

Many hair, skin and nails formulas deliver vitamins and nutrients, but very few supply keratin —possibly due to the difficulty in converting the protein to a functional form the body can use. One unique ingredient to look for is Cynatine HNS, which is made through a patented process that breaks down protein into microscopic, soluble peptides. Plus, studies on Cynatine HNS have shown it has the ability to reduce shedding and support the hair growth cycle.

What About Biotin?

Unlike keratin, biotin is part of the B-vitamin family, so you will often see it in hair, skin and nails supplements. Good dietary sources of biotin tend to also be rich in protein, such as eggs, nuts and meats. In supporting healthy hair, biotin acts as a mini-transporter that carries oxygen to cells in the scalp, follicles and other body systems. The body also uses biotin to produce amino acids, which are then converted into keratin.

While you may be tempted to compare keratin with biotin, each nutrient works differently to promote healthier, thicker tresses. With that said, if you’re seeking hair support from a supplement, look for Cynatine HNS. This soluble keratin protein is a more direct source of the nutrient your hair needs.

Though the winter may have felt long, help from keratin and biotin will have your hair springing back to life in no time!
