8 Tips for a Hair & Makeup-Friendly Workout

You’re ready for the day--hair and makeup done. But you’re supposed to hit the gym in just a few hours. Will all that time spent lengthening your lashes and straightening your locks be wasted after 10 minutes on the treadmill? Not if you follow these pointers! Here are eight ways to stay looking great while getting in shape.

8 Tips for a Hair & Makeup-Friendly Workout

Hair

Dry Shampoo
To keep sweat from building on your scalp (and ruining a time-consuming blow-out!), try applying dry shampoo just before exercising. Afterward, divide hair into sections and reapply the powder (spray options are even better!) to your both roots and strands to help absorb any excess moisture or oil.

Headbands
A headband can be a big help for preserving hairstyles. Look for one made from sweat-wicking material, and go wide—this will help to prevent bumps and to keep moisture off your forehead and the back of your neck. You’ll usually find headbands in fun colors and patterns, so you'll look stylish, too (always a plus).

Fashion a lose bun
Wearing a loose bun high on your head can help sweat from getting trapped. Divide hair down the middle into two sections; twist sections together, roll into a bun and secure with bobby pins or clips. Be sure to keep the hair around your face loose—if it’s too tight, sweat has nowhere to go except your scalp.

Avoid tight ponytails
Ponytails, like buns, should be fashioned loosely. Pull your hair up high, and reposiition the elastic band often, or you'll end up with a line across your hair when the ponytail is removed. Clips are even better to use than bands!

Makeup

Start with primer
Prep for a long-lasting look by applying makeup primer before foundation. Primer creates a barrier between your skin and the makeup, helping it to stay in place. As a bonus, some products, such as Reviva Labs Makeup Primer, help fill in fine lines, smooth the look of skin and provide anti-aging benefits with added nutrients (this one has antioxidant CoQ10).

Apply BB cream
To avoid the heavy feeling of layering too many skincare and cosmetics products, try an all-in-one solution like BB cream. Besides giving your skin an even, “made-up” look, BB cream hydrates, brightens and protects your skin. Go for a water-based formula, which is less likely to clog pores.

Pat gently
Bring along a small towel and gently pat, don’t wipe, your face while exercising. You might also carry blotting sheets in your gym bag. They're especially useful for eliminating shiny spots on your forehead, nose and chin.

Try spray toner
What could be better than a cool spritz during a heated workout? Spray toner isn’t just refreshing, it helps nourish your skin and keeps makeup in place. I like Andalou Naturals Clementine + C Illuminating Toner, which is non-GMO and made with fruit stem cells and antioxdiants.
