All-Natural DIY Halloween Makeup Guide

All Hallows Eve is fast approaching, and you want to look the part. But you don’t want to use chemical-laden commercial face paint to achieve your spooky, ghoulish or gory plan. Not to worry! We’re sharing some simple recipes for all-natural Halloween makeup that you can scare up on your own, almost as quickly as you can say “trick or treat!”

Mother Applying All-Natural Do-it-Yourself Halloween Makeup on Daughter's Face | Vitacost.com/BlogWhite face paint

White face paint can serve as the base for skeletons, ghosts, zombies and more. Here’s an easy recipe for a non-toxic variety that contains only four ingredients. Here’s what you’ll need: 1 teaspoon of white flour, 5 teaspoons of cornstarch, 2 tablespoons of solid white shortening, 3 or 4 drops of glycerin, bowl, fork, measuring spoons Here’s what you’ll do:
  • In small bowl, mix the flour and cornstarch.
  • Blend the shortening and the mixture with a fork.
  • Slowly stir in the glycerin until the consistency becomes creamy. Add additional cornstarch or flour to thicken, if needed.
When you’re ready to get into character, use a sponge or makeup brush to apply the paint (make sure to avoid your eyes!). When it’s time to remove the paint, wipe it off gently with a tissue and wash your face with soap and warm water.

Colored face paint

Colored face paint is a must if you want to be an alien, devil or life-size chocolate bar this Halloween! To create different shades of face paint, follow the recipe above, but try adding some spices, powders or fruit or vegetable juice to the mixture. Start with a pinch of spice or a few drops of juice and keep adding in small increments until you reach your desired color. Note: It may be best to first test a small section of skin on your arm as the juice or powder may cause temporary staining.

Fake blood

Thinking about being a vampire or a deranged serial killer this October 31? The following recipe is sure to get your blood flowing! Here’s what you’ll need: 8 to 10 drops of all-natural red food coloring, 2 tablespoons of chocolate syrup, 1 cup of corn syrup, bowl, spoon, measuring spoon, tool for application Here’s what you’ll do:
  • In bowl, mix chocolate and corn syrups together.
  • Slowly stir in food coloring until desired red shade is achieved.
Instead of the food coloring, you can experiment with any of the following: Apply the blood to the “affected areas” using a cotton swab, dropper, spatula or similar tool.

Fake scabs

Scabs are a must for all manner of gruesome Halloween costumes, and this recipe is super easy—and realistic! Here’s what you’ll need: 1 teaspoon of corn syrup, 4 teaspoons of water, 1 tablespoon of onion flakes, 2 tablespoons of cornstarch, 4 to 5 drops of all-natural red food coloring, small bowl, spoon Here’s what you’ll do:
  • In bowl, mix all the ingredients together.
  • Clump mixture onto skin where desired and allow it to dry.

Fake entrails (a.k.a., guts)

Nothing enhances fake scabs quite like fake guts! And this recipe will have everyone around you and recoiling in disgust, if not terror. Here’s what you’ll need: 8 to 10 drops of all-natural red food coloring, 2 tablespoons of chocolate syrup, 1 cup of corn syrup, tissue paper, bowl, spoon, measuring spoon Here’s what you’ll do:
  • Prepare fake blood using the recipe above.
  • Tear tissue paper into thin strips.
  • Mix the blood into the tissue paper until you’ve achieved your desired texture.
  • Clump the mixture onto your skin where desired and allow it to dry.
Hint: You can also bulk up the consistency of your entrails—and help them to stick better—by mixing in some oatmeal or chunky peanut butter!
