Natural Ways to Protect Your Pup From Fleas & Ticks

During these warm spring and summer months, we like to spend a lot more time outdoors. And so do our pets! If your dogs are anything like mine, they spend the long sunny days lounging on the patio soaking up the rays. But with that extra time outdoors our pets are getting down right dirtier. From rolling around in the garden to playing on the grass, your pets are not just getting dirty, but they are exposed to more parasites and pests with this increased outdoor frolicking.

Natural Flea Control

We live by the hills and the dogs love to join us on hikes up and down the trails. One of the biggest risks to our dogs’ health, besides rattlesnakes, are the ticks they can pick up along the trails. Throw in a romp across the grass at the park on the way and you’re adding fleas into the mix, too.

Since I’m about as likely to douse my fur-babies in poison as I am to feed my kids Twinkies for dinner, I searched out and found some great natural and non-toxic ways to protect and treat cats or dogs when it comes to fleas and ticks. I spray Toby, Charlie and Tyson with Vet’s Best Flea and Tick Spray for Dogs and Cats, made with peppermint oil and clove extract, to ward off and even kill any of those pests that try to hitch a ride back home. Another popular option--though not a "natural" product--is Frontline Plus. When other remedies don't work, many pet owners consider this standby.

When it’s bath time, and that time comes around often, I use Natural Chemistry Natural Flea and Tick Shampoo with Oatmeal for our dogs because two of my three have dry, sensitive skin. The oatmeal is soothing to their overly-pampered pooch sensibilities, and the patent-pending formula keeps fleas, ticks, black flies and mosquitos at bay.

If the problem is in your own backyard – literally – you can treat your yard safely and effectively with Dr. Goodpet Outside Flea Relief Non-Toxic Yard Spray made from diatomaceous earth. You can even effectively treat a problem in your home without all the nasty chemicals. Natural Chemistry De-Flea Pet Bedding spray will take care of the problem by killing fleas on contact and NaturVet No Flea Carpet Crystals fight the fleas and their eggs in your carpet and furniture.

No more of those chemical bombs and poison soaks. Keep your pets healthy and safe from bugs and pests with natural, non-toxic remedies. Your fur-babies and your whole family will thank you.
