Turn a family weekend on the lake into a wellness retreat! There's nothing like waking up to a sunrise over still water. That's why you have to grab those few precious moments of quiet, untouched nature while it lasts. Make the most of a long weekend by reveling in what the great outdoors has to offer from dawn to dusk.
Fun fitness -- The greatest part of being on a lake is the accessibility you have to a variety of activities. Typically, there are nature trails that circle the lake. And, of course, the water is calm enough for just about any water sport -- from something as soothing as a morning kayak to an afternoon of high-energy water skiing.
Morning wake-up workouts:
- Casual swimming
- Stand-up paddle boarding
- Kayaking
- Yoga on the dock
- Nature walking
High-intensity water sports:
- Wakeboarding
- Water skiing
- Swimming races
- Trail running
Excellent eats -- At the end of an active day, gather the family around for a meal that will satisfy exhausted bodies. Aim to keep your dinner healthy with a few easy ingredient swaps.
- Instead of eating fat-laden pork barbecue, marinate chicken breasts with low-carb BBQ sauce. For sides, grill fresh veggies and corn on the cob. And, I can't have BBQ without coleslaw, but I lighten up the traditional recipe by using low-fat dressing instead of mayonnaise.
- Drink a tall glass of refreshing lemonade -- just keep it homemade. Squeeze the juice of fresh lemons and mix with water, ice and stevia (no white sugar needed). It takes a little more elbow grease, but your waistline will thank you later.
- Indulge in a "super" dessert that's not only delicious but actually nutritious, to boot! Because everyone loves melt-in-your-mouth s'mores, grab a bag of fat-free marshmallows, graham crackers and coconut-flavored cacao bars. The chocolate bars are jam-packed with antioxidants and other good-for-you ingredients, plus they're made with 66% cacao. I'll roast to that!
