Pan-Fried Teriyaki Glazed Tofu with Rice
Planning to order takeout tonight? Hold the phone! This homemade teriyaki tofu recipe is about to blow your mind. Chances are, you likely have most of these ingredients in your kitchen already (especially if you like to stock up on
healthy cooking staples at Vitacost.com!).
First, prep a fluffy batch of white rice. While that’s cooking, you’ll create all the flavorful goodness, including homemade teriyaki sauce and a simple four-ingredient “batter” for the tofu “steaks” – hellooooo crispy tofu bliss! Not into rice? No problem. This glazed teriyaki tofu pairs well with
noodles or just a simple side of steamed or sautéed veggies.
Pan-Fried Teriyaki Glazed Tofu with Rice
Battered tofu
- 14 oz. extra-firm tofu
- 1 Tbsp. organic all-purpose flour
- 1 tsp. garlic powder
- 1 Tbsp. cornstarch
- 1-2 Tbsp. avocado oil
Rice
- 1-1/2 cups organic white rice, (rinsed until water runs clear)
- 3 cups water
- Pinch Himalayan salt
- 1 tsp. avocado oil, (optional)
Teriyaki glaze
- 1/2 cup organic tamari sauce
- 1-1/2 tsp. mirin, (optional)
- 2 cups water
- 5 garlic cloves, (minced)
- 1-1/4 tsp. fresh grated ginger
- 1/2 cup light brown sugar
- 1/4 cup water
- 1/4 cup cornstarch
Toppings
- Chopped green onions
- Sesame seeds
Tofu prep
- Drain tofu and press for 15 minutes. Slice into four “steaks” and set aside.
Rice
- In pot, bring water to boil. Add rice and salt. Reduce heat to low, cover and simmer for 15-20 minutes or until rice completely absorbs water.
Teriyaki sauce
In saucepot over medium heat, combine tamari, mirin, 2 cups water, cloves, ginger and brown sugar. Simmer roughly 3 minutes or until sugar dissolves. Stir in cornstarch and remaining ¼ cup water until mixture thickens. Remove from heat, cover and set aside.
Pan-fried tofu
- In small bowl, combine flour, garlic powder and cornstarch. Sprinkle mixture over sliced tofu until evenly covered. Remove excess.
- In frying pan over medium heat, warm avocado oil. Cook tofu slices on each side for roughly 4 minutes or until browned. Transfer tofu to plate and pour on sauce to coat (save leftover sauce).
- Serve with white rice and garnish with green onions and sesame seeds.
- Chef’s tip: Save remaining teriyaki sauce and use for stir fry dishes, Buddha bowls and more.
- Missing a few of these ingredients? Plan ahead and order them from Vitacost.com.
